French Toast (Serves 3)
Base serves 2 with leftovers β slide to scale the ingredients.
Ingredients
- 6-8 slices bread (brioche, challah, or thick-cut white bread work best)
- 3 large eggs
- 3/4 cup milk
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- Pinch of salt
- Butter for cooking
- Maple syrup (for serving)
- Powdered sugar (optional, for serving)
Instructions
In a shallow bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, vanilla, cinnamon, and salt until well combined.
Heat a large skillet or griddle over medium heat and add a pat of butter.
Dip each slice of bread into the egg mixture, letting it soak for a few seconds on each side (don't oversoak or it will be soggy).
Place the soaked bread on the hot skillet and cook for 2-3 minutes per side, until golden brown and cooked through.
Add more butter to the pan as needed for each batch.
Serve hot with maple syrup and a dusting of powdered sugar if desired.
Tips
- Day-old bread works better than fresh - it absorbs the custard without getting too soggy
- For extra flavor, add a pinch of nutmeg or a splash of orange zest to the egg mixture
- Keep finished pieces warm in a 200Β°F oven while cooking remaining batches
